Petros Markaris, novelist, playwright, scriptwriter and translator, was born in Constantinople in 1937. He studied Economics. Since 1976 he has been working as freelance writer.

He worked with film director Theodoros Angelopoulos for the scripts of Meres tou '36 (Days of '36), O Megalexandros (Megalexandros), To Meteoro Vima tou Pelargou (The Suspended Step of the Stork), To Vlema tou Odissea (Ulysses's Gaze), Mia Eoniotita ke Mia Mera (Eternity and a Day), I Skoni tou Hronou (The Dust of Time). He was also the scriptwriter of TV series Anatomia Enos Englimatos (Anatomy of a Crime), which was on Greek TV for three seasons.

Petros Markaris has also translated in Greek works by Frank Benedict, Arthur Schnitzler, Bertolt Brecht, Peter Weiss, Franz Xaver Kroetz and Thomas Bernhardt. His latest translation has been that of Goethe's Faust.
