Born in Chania, Crete, he studied Andanced Music Theory, Composition and History of Music at the National Conservatory (with professors Michalis Vourtsis and Stefanos Vasiliadis).
He works as music composer for the theatre and the cinema.
He has written music for 25 theatrical plays and 30 films. He also has a keen interest in collecting Greek folk music, studying its evolution through time.
His book "Laiki-Praktiki Organopechtes" (Selftaught Musicians of Folk Songs), published in 1983, included an introduction-research and a record of people's accounts (Epikerotita Publications).
From 1982 until 1999, he put together and was in charge of the recordings of folk music played on the "Trito Programa" (3rd Program) of the Hellenic Radio, compiling a collection which was considered unique by Greek and foreign specialists. The Netherlands Public Radio devoted its special annual edition for 1993 and 1995 to these specific recordings.
Since 1975, Giorgos Papadakis works for daily newspapers and magazines; newspapers "Ta Nea", "Eleftherotipia" , "Kathimerini", magazines "Ena", "Difono", "Echo".
Since 1988 he has overseen the release of 18 albums (and the relative research) consisting of recordings of folk music and "rebetika" (the urban blues), and he is a member of the teaching staff of the Professional Journalism Workshop. Since 1978 he has been working for the Greek Broadcasting Corporation as musician, producer and member of the administrative staff.
In 1992 he won the International Music Award for Tonia Marketaki's film Kristalines Nichtes (Crystal Nights).
From 1993 until 1997 he served as Program Director for ET2 state TV channel and consultant for ERT S.A. on matters relating to art and culture. In 2001 he received the Music Award at the 42nd Film Festival of Thessaloniki for his music in Lakis Papastathis's film To Monon tis Zois tou Taxidion (His One and Only Journey). In 2002 he was the scientific coordinator of the Centre for Reseach of the Music Tradition of Thrace, Asia Minor, Euxinos Pontos, which is a branch of the Ministry of Culture National Cultural City Network. From 2002 to 2004, he was a Jury member of the Greek Film Centre.
In 2005 he was a member of the Scientific Committee and a lecturer at the International Conference entitled "Mikis Theodorakis, The Man, The Musician, The Politician, The Cretan, The Universal", hosted by the Perfecture of Chania from 29 to 31 of July.
