Α Hostage

Last Show: Sunday, 8th of April

In the Theatre Wagon, the Central Scene of Train-Theater, the play "A Hostage" by Brendan Mehan is presented, one of the most important Irish authors of the previous century, with music written by Mikis Theodorakis. This is a powerful theatrical script, written in 1958, with solid structure and interesting characters, very timely, and a great production for the Train, which involves a ten (10) actor cast.

The music of the play was composed by Mikis Theodorakis in 1962, for the first presentation of the play in Greece, from the theatrical company of Leonidas Trivizas. The 16 songs of the play were assimilated by the greek people and were being sung for decades later. The musical concept for the "Laughing Child" was used as a score in Kostas Gavras' movie "Z".

The play takes place in a brothel house of Dublin, where prostitutes, transvestites, ex-revolutionists and outcasts hung out. In a bleak atmosphere that reflects the mutilation of society, a young English soldier is held hostage as a retaliation for the imprisonment of a young IRA member that is going to be hanged in a Be;fast prison. In this awkward environment a love story unfolds, in contradiction to the political feasibilities.

The message of the play is timeless and global. In periods of war, crisis, sociopolitical contradictions and reclassifcations, the victims always come from both sides and are usually innocent.

In the play, the Irish revolutionist Brendan Behan meets the detachment of Brecht, while the play's known songs are performed by the actrors polyphonically, a capella or accompanied by instruments that the actors play live on the stage.
