The iconic “pocket musical” associated with the birth of the Railway Carriage Theater returns with a new cast for a third successful run

“Craving for Cherries”, the celebrated “pocket musical” by the acclaimed Polish poet and writer Agnieszka Osiecka, returns to the Theater Wagon with Antriana Andreovits and Alexandros Siatras, continuing its long journey at the Railway Carriage Theater to Treno sto Rouf and introducing a new generation of audiences to the renowned artist’s tender, poetic and profoundly human writing.

The work was first presented in Greece during the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, directed by acclaimed Polish actor Daniel Olbrychski and performed by Tatiana Ligari and Andreas Natsios. This landmark production became the inspiration behind the creation of the Railway Carriage Theater to Treno sto Rouf, the world’s only railway cultural venue. In 2022, A Craving for Cherries was revived by director Efthymis Christou to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Railway Carriage Theater’s successful artistic journey.

Today, the historic production, warmly embraced by audiences, returns with a new cast, offering a younger generation of theatregoers the opportunity to discover and journey into Osiecka’s poetic and symbolic universe. Adriana Andreovits and Alexandros Siatras, accompanied on piano by Yasmin Folini, bring fresh light to the work’s humour, sensitivity and emotional nuances, once again under the direction of Efthymis Christou.

The story takes us to Poland during the 1960s and 1970s. Two strangers, a man and a woman, meet on a railway platform and board the same carriage. He is an ordinary, down-to-earth man, while she dreams of “a… pink hat.” Figures from the past, memories and hidden secrets gradually emerge. As the train travels along the tracks, a painful confrontation begins between them, revealing through humour and song the clash between two entirely different worlds.

A tender musical for two, featuring original music by Minas I. Alexiadis and lyrics by Afroditi Manou, exploring love, the need for companionship, the erosion of relationships and the profoundly human desire for new beginnings.
