"STIFF VIOLETS"
musical performance by NENA VENETSANOU
for 10 unique nights
Nena Venetsanou boards for the first time at the Railway Carriage Theater to Treno sto Rouf and presents her new songs at the Theater Wagon, under the general title "STIFF VIOLETS" for only 10 performances every Wednesday at 21:00 from January 22 to March 26, 2025.
After the emblematic 1983 album "Pandora's Box", a rich artistic work for the dissemination of the Female Word in poetry of Greek women poets of the interwar period, Nena Venetsanou returns with a new anthology of poems by German-speaking poets Nellie Sachs, Masha Kaleco, Rosé Ausländer, Elze-Lasker Schuler, Edith Södergrad, Hannah Arendt, Simone Weil, Sarah Kirsch, Ilze Eichinger, set to music in Greek translated by Ioanna Avramidou.
These German-speaking poets lived as stateless people in various countries after the Second World War, rebuilding their relationship with the world through poetry, despite those who suggested silence. Their work blossomed like a flower through the ruins of war, giving Voice to the Dumb of the gaze, which penetrates into what is fragile and which questions more than it answers.
The hostess of these poets in Greek are the poetry of Victoria Theodorou, Nina Nahmia, Giovanna Kalpaxi and the testimony from the Nazi camps of Maria Tsiskaki.
However much the position of women in Europe has been restored, not enough has been done to accept the artistic contribution of women poets. Their poetry, isolated or scattered across collections, loses its weight as an image of female identity within the European World of 20th Century Literature.
"STIFF VIOLETS" have nothing to long for, their poems walk alone in silence, but with the power of song all the feelings they contain come back to life.
