When three well-to-do New Yorkers set foot on the thick sands of South Africa, a few years after the end of World War II, each can't wait to encounter something different there. When the journey begins, each of the three still carries on him the metropolitan air he used to breathe, the unwrinkled clothes of the city, the cultural arrogance. When the journey is over, no one will be the same and no one is guaranteed to return. The clothes will have worn out, the skin will have taken on the color and dust of the steppe, the eyes will express confusion and anguish, the destination will no longer seem vague, the rift between the tourist and the visitor will have been violent and deep. Because no one can be a mere observer in the desert. And no one there can escape himself. Bernardo Bertolucci attempted to adapt Paul Bowles' shocking novel for the screen, necessarily skipping over some of its charming mysteries. But behind the mystifying landscapes of otherworldly beauty photographed by Vittorio Storaro, the emotional score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, the lazy narration, Debra Winger and John Malkovich beautiful in their attractive self-destruction, there is the raw and desperate existential adventure that Bowles captured for brave leavers and ignorant tourists alike.
